We have just released our 2018 Zweigelt to the public. For those of you who don’t know Zweigelt, it is a lighter red which is naturally low in tannins and histamines (a great choice for those who get headaches from red wine). It is also not a very common varietal. Predominantly from Austria, the second largest planting of Zweigelt is in Canada, and Upper Bench produces one of only five Zweigelts made in B.C.
Our Zweigelt grapes are sourced entirely from our Estate vineyard, which is organically farmed and handpicked. It is then aged for 18 months in neutral French oak barrels, giving it just enough structure while still maintaining its fruit-forward characteristics. The 2018 vintage was made more in keeping with the traditional Austrian method, so it is a little lighter than past vintages.
